Vavi I, Budapest

Stock Exchange, Budapest | Adaptive Reuse and Urban Activation | Project architect under French Architect Christian Biecher.

The Vision: Transforming a Historic Landmark into a Contemporary Urban Destination
As a project architect working under Christian Biecher, I was involved in the transformation of the former Budapest Stock Exchange, located at the edge of Vörösmarty Square in the city’s 5th district. The project, spanning approximately 18,000 sqm, redefines the historic structure as a multi-level retail, office, and restaurant destination, now known as Váci 1.

Situated at the end of one of Budapest’s most active pedestrian shopping streets, the project was conceived as a new urban anchor within a dense commercial context. The intervention focused on activating the building in relation to its surroundings, strengthening its connection to the city’s main retail axis and continuous pedestrian flow.

The design approach centered on the adaptive reuse of the existing structure—preserving its architectural identity while introducing a clear and legible internal organization. Circulation systems were redefined to support a dynamic mix of uses, allowing the building to function as an integrated and accessible urban hub.

Particular attention was given to the relationship between interior and city. Ground-floor retail and dining spaces open directly toward Vörösmarty Square and the surrounding streets, reinforcing the building’s public role. Upper levels were adapted to accommodate flexible commercial and office spaces, working within the constraints and structural logic of the historic envelope.

Developed in collaboration with a local Hungarian team, Konig & Wagner, the project carefully balances preservation and transformation—retaining the character of the original stock exchange while enabling a contemporary program of premium retail, restaurants, and cafés.
